Problem-solving skills are important not only at school but also in your child’s daily life. These are skills children can take with them into adulthood and help them with managing everyday problems. Problem-solving is learned from quality child education and further developed into high school and beyond. At home, here are some ways to hone your child’s problem-solving skills:
- Teach them how to evaluate the problem
This involves identifying the problem, its possible solutions, and the pros and cons of each solution. This way, they have a clear formula for solving the problem and makes them more confident in their ability to try. Activities to promote this include “having a mess of toys every after playtime” or “not having anyone to play with at recess.”
- Practice solving problems regularly
Don’t rush to solve your child’s problems for them. Have them walk through the problem-solving steps.
- Allow for natural consequences
As long as it’s safe, this approach leads to a discussion about problem-solving, thus helping them make a better choice next time.
