Teaching children to pray is an essential part of introducing them to Christ and reinforcing their Christian education. The Lord provided us with prayer so we could communicate with Him, and getting children comfortable with prayer helps them to understand that Christ is always accessible and close to them.
As a devout Christian preschool in Florida, our teachers at Little Lords and Ladies Learning Academy teaches students how to pray and how important it is. But as a parent, there are various ways that you can teach your children to pray too.
Here are some ideas you should consider:
- Let Your Children See You Praying
The best way to teach your children about prayer is to let them see you praying. Look for opportunities to pray in front of them, just as you would seek out opportunities to teach them about humility and manners. For instance, you can pray before and after meals, or in the morning and before bed.
- Frame Prayer as a Conversation
Let your children know that prayer is simply a conversation with Christ. Let your children know that they can and should speak to Christ in their own words. While there are some specific prayers that they can learn (i.e. The Lord’s Prayer), let them know that it isn’t the only way to pray – let them know that they can talk to God naturally.
- Be Supportive
Encourage your child to talk to God about whatever is on their mind. Let them know that no prayer is too small or insignificant, and that they can talk to God about whatever they want.
The Bottom Line
As a Christian-based preschool in Orlando, Florida, we do everything that we can to help your children learn the importance of prayer. Use the tips above to reinforce our Christian teachings at home!
